Insulated Dog House Plans to Keep Your Pet Healthy

It’s extremely important to your pet’s health to insulate it’s sleeping space. Dogs in particular are very sensitive to climate, which is why insulated dog house plans come in very handy when constructing a dog kennel. This article is a basic DIY guide to achieving a high quality, insulated dog house.

Number Of Dogs And Breed

Generally you will want to build one kennel per dog that you own. However, if you’re feeling creative, you could also opt for a duplex dog house. This is essentially 2 kennels attached in the middle with a removable separating wall. In summer the wall could remain in, and in winter you could take it out so your pets can cuddle up together. This in itself is a bit of an “insulation” trick.

Breed is another factor in the grand scheme of dog kennels. Some breeds are extremely sensitive to air temperature, whilst others are more or less indifferent. Read about your dog’s breed, and make a smart choice in what type of dog house to build.

Construction Materials And Internal Climate

There are 3 construction materials that are typically recommended to the DIY dog house enthusiast: wood, brick, and metal. In my experience in building kennels, wood is by far the best option in 90% of cases. It’s cheap (or free if you’ve got some junk lumber in your backyard), easily manipulated, and as safe and sturdy as anything else.

Wood allows you to glue or staple any kind of insulation material with ease. Metal can get very hot inside, making it my least preferred. Brick is pretty good, but you’ll want to spend some extra money on internal insulation. I would generally recommend brick dog houses to be built only in particularly hot climate areas.

Measuring Your Dog For Optimal Sizing

Believe it or not, the best way to ensure that you’re building the perfect sized dog kennel is to measure your dog’s height, length, and floor space that he or she uses when laying down. Use a measuring tape and adjust your base dog house plans accordingly if you need to.
