House training a dog can be a real nightmare if you’re not sure what to do. If you’ve just got a new dog and it’s making its mess all round the house, then you really need to get to grips with doing some good house training.

First things first, you need to get a crate for your dog. This will be where the dog sleeps, and where the dog will spend most of its time during this training period. As a general rule, dogs will not defecate where they sleep, so having the dog inside the crate should instantly remove the problem of indoor defecation.

Whenever the dog is inside the crate, ignore it. Don’t give it any attention at all. Then take the dog outside every 30 minutes. If the dog defecates outside, then reward it with some outside play time and maybe some other rewards and treats, such as dog biscuits and lots of attention from you.

If the dog does not defecate outside, or worse, if it defecates inside, then instantly put the dog back inside the crate. This teaches the dog that making its doggy mess inside the house is bad and making its mess outside is good.

Additional points to note:

• Whenever you leave the house without the dog, make sure the dog is inside the crate.
• Make sure there is no food or water inside the crate.
• You can have dog toys inside the crate, to keep the dog amused.
• Make sure nobody else goes inside the dog crate. The crate is the dog’s personal safe place.
