It is sad to think about the dogs out there chained to a tree or running loose in the backyard without a shelter, a place to take refuge from inclement weather or other annoyances. Just like we humans, the basics for dogs are food, water and shelter. Dog houses now days are inexpensive and easily obtainable. They come in all sizes and shapes with many different features. The heavy duty plastic dog houses that break apart in two pieces are lightweight and easy to clean. There are portable dog houses made with ultra lightweight material, wooden houses and even tent like houses you can take to the beach, lake or camping. Some houses come with their own padded mat while others have only a bare floor. Air conditioners are standard in a few models. You can spend anywhere from fifty dollars to as much as you would ever want to spend on a dog house. Look around, do some investigating and you will find the perfect house for your dog and your situation.

If you cannot afford a manufactured house for your dog, you can always make one from materials you have on hand. If you do not have anything to work with, check with your neighbors. Chances are someone will have some old pieces of wood they would gladly part with. It is essential that your dog house has a floor. You can include things in the house to make your dog more comfortable but some dogs will prefer the bare floor. An old comforter, rugs or pillows work well and some dogs will allow cedar chips. Cedar chips are the best thing to use if your dog goes for it. They make your dog smell great and insects absolutely hate them. Unfortunately, some dogs hate them too.
