Dog House Training – How to Potty Train Your Dog
The Why of Dog House Training
Bringing home a new puppy or dog is an exciting process. She is cute, cuddly and has funny antics that you tell all your friends about. That is…- until you discover your new Italian loafers have poop in them or when you go to watch your favorite TV show only to discover a strong smell of urine on the side of the couch.
The reasons are obvious why you want to house break your dog. Most importantly you want her to poop and pee outdoors only. In order to house train you new puppy or dog it is important that you do this early on in bringing her home and have a predetermined system for handling the potty training.
Correct Mindset
Having a correct mindset is going to give you a good foundation from which you can learn the most about your dog by training and correcting her when she does things that you don’t want. You must be patient with your new dog and when mistakes happen you must correct them immediately as they happen. Timing is the most important factor to stopping potty. You must never punish or be angry with your dog if she has just gone potty 2 seconds ago; it is too late; yelling, scolding will only confuse her. You must be determined to be alert and vigilant to her behaviors and tendencies that indicate she about to go potty before or as it’s happening.
Training Location and Material
You will want to find a space for your puppy or dog in your house that has hard floors and is easy to clean; no carpets please. This space should be enclosed with a plastic gate to limit her movement to just that area. This is not punishment or being mean; this is the training ground and you will be removing it in a few weeks when the training is over. The space should be enough for your puppy or dog to walk around in depending on her size.
You will want to lay paper down onto the floor with several layers. Lastly you will want to get a pet cleaning product for eliminating odor. When your puppy goes potty, immediate remove the damp and wet newspaper and clean the hard surface below it with the deodorant keeping in mind that a puppy or dog’s sense of smell is thousands of time stronger than a humans. If she smells potty or urine she will think that it is ok to go there again.
The Human Training Part
When you first bring your puppy or dog home you should be taking her outside every 2 to 3 hours so that she gets familiar with going potty outside. Puppies have little bladder or potty control so you must take her out frequently. The first thing you should do in the mornings is to bring your puppy or dog outside for a walk.
Now when at home in the training spot, it is important to stay vigilant to your puppy and her signals of what she does prior to going potty. Your goal is to identify the signals beforehand and jump into action by taking her out. Does she sniff out a location in the corner, does she begin to squat, does she bark? Whatever the signals or behavior are you must preempt the potty with a quick “No!” or other command. Make sure you have gotten her attention and either pick her up or walk her outside to do the potty. When outside you want to use a command for her to do the potty, so say “Go Potty!” Even if she was going to go with out your command you should use this command consistently to train her that Potty means pooping.
Staying Consistent
Dogs learn by repetition. Using the same commands for going potty and “NO!” and praising your dog or puppy when she does something well is vital to quick learning. Using the training area you have laid aside and placing her within it for the duration of the training will help by not letting other factors disrupt the house breaking process.
The feeding times should be regular and the same time each day. This will help your puppy or dog and you know when it’s time to go potty. Most dogs go potty shortly after eating.
The whole dog house training process can vary from a couple of days to as long as a few months. But rest assured if you take the time and follow this set procedure its a puny amount of time to pay for having a house broken dog for life. Make it happen.
